hello!

MY NAME’S ANISSA

I am a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media, pursuing a degree in Journalism and Videography with a double major in Peace, War and Defense.

When I’m not thinking about the complex meaning of Kurt Vonnegut’s writing, or the fact that there are racial disparities in healthcare and a lack of resources, or the existence of tendonitis and how that manifests itself, I am creating. Storytelling is the transportation between ideas and actions. The stories of all the people like my family, who struggled with inequity and poverty when coming to the US, are never told or heard. These types of narrative are glanced over, even though they have the potential to be understood by people who might be able to address issues or discover history in the making. I want to give people a chance to see and taste my heritage, culture and history. I want to tell stories that move people to act.

I would describe myself as a backpack creator. I love creating, whether it be through photography, videography, writing, and drawing. I have an insatiable passion for film and I believe that storytelling is a medium that allows for people to create deeper connections with themselves and others around them. Putting people’s stories and creations first is a common theme I have grown up around.

With my parents coming from a different country and starting a new chapter in their lives, I have learnt to cherish stories. If I am not creating a story based on narratives or fiction, I am using my camera to create memories and stories around me. I believe that intentional storytelling provides people with the voices they need to tell their stories as they see fit. There is power in sharing untold stories, and that includes whether it be in entertainment, politics, sports and much more.
